By creating a Lift account or using the Lift rider app, the Lift Driver app, or Lift's web app, you agree to these terms. If you don't agree, don't use Lift. Creating an account and tapping "agree" in-app constitutes a valid electronic agreement between you and Lift under South Africa's Electronic Communications and Transactions Act 25 of 2002 (ECTA) — you don't need a handwritten signature for it to bind you.
Lift is built and operated by Prism Technologies (Pty) Ltd, and connects riders who need a trip with independent drivers in QwaQwa who can provide one. Lift is a technology platform — drivers are not Lift's or Prism Technologies' employees, and Lift is not a transport operator in its own right.
You must be at least 18 years old and able to form a binding contract to use Lift.
Drivers must additionally meet all requirements that apply to e-hailing drivers under South African law, including — as at the "last updated" date above — those introduced by the National Land Transport Amendment Act's e-hailing regulations, in force since March 2026:
You're responsible for holding and maintaining all of the above yourself; Lift may ask you to show proof of any of them and may suspend your ability to accept rides if you can't. [TODO: confirm whether Lift's own driver-onboarding flow currently captures/verifies PrDP and background-check evidence, and update this section and the onboarding flow together once it does — see the matching note in the Privacy Policy.]
You're responsible for keeping your login details secure and for activity on your account. Tell us right away if you think your account has been compromised.
Fares are calculated per the applicable vehicle type's rate card at the time of the ride. Card and EFT payments are processed by Paystack or PayFast; by paying with either, you also agree to that provider's own terms. Cash payments are made directly to your driver. Lift does not extend credit to riders or drivers and is not a credit provider under the National Credit Act 34 of 2005 — every trip is paid for at or shortly after the time it's taken.
Either party may cancel a ride before it starts. A cancellation fee may apply depending on how late the cancellation is and who initiated it — this is shown in-app before you confirm a cancellation, and is set to be reasonable in light of the circumstances (how far along the trip was, and any cost or loss already incurred), consistent with the cancellation-fee principles in the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008.
Riders and drivers are expected to treat each other respectfully. Lift may suspend or remove an account for unsafe behaviour, harassment, fraud, or repeated poor ratings. In a genuine emergency, use the in-app emergency action or contact local emergency services directly — the in-app action dials South Africa's universal emergency number, it is not a Lift-monitored service, and Lift cannot guarantee any particular response time.
Riders and drivers rate each other after every trip. Ratings help keep the service reliable and may factor into account standing.
The Lift name, logo, and the apps themselves (their design, code, and content) belong to Prism Technologies (Pty) Ltd or its licensors. Using Lift gives you a personal, non-transferable licence to use the apps to request or provide rides — it doesn't give you any ownership or right to copy, modify, or redistribute them.
You may delete your account at any time from within the app. Lift may suspend or terminate an account that violates these terms, poses a safety risk, is used fraudulently, or (for drivers) no longer meets the eligibility requirements in section 4. Where practical, we'll tell you why.
Lift is provided "as is." We work to keep fare estimates, tracking, and matching accurate and reliable, but we don't guarantee the service will always be uninterrupted or error-free.
To the extent permitted by law, Lift's liability for any claim arising from your use of the service is limited to the fare amount of the ride in question. Lift is not liable for the independent actions of riders or drivers.
You agree to indemnify Lift against any claim, loss, or cost arising from your breach of these terms, your violation of any law, or your negligent or wrongful conduct while using the apps — except to the extent that claim, loss, or cost was caused by Lift.
Lift is a technology platform, not an insurer. Drivers must hold whatever motor vehicle and passenger liability cover is legally required for e-hailing/public transport use of their vehicle, and are responsible for confirming that their own policy covers carrying paying passengers. Riders should note that Lift does not itself provide trip insurance.
Lift isn't responsible for a failure or delay in the service caused by something reasonably outside our control — including load-shedding or other power outages, network or internet outages, natural disasters, civil unrest, or changes in law.
How Lift collects, uses, and protects your personal information is set out in the Privacy Policy, which forms part of these terms by reference.
If something's gone wrong, contact us first using the details in section 26 so we can try to sort it out directly. If you're a consumer and remain unhappy with the outcome, you may also refer an unresolved complaint to the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud (CGSO) or the National Consumer Commission under the Consumer Protection Act, or to the Information Regulator for a POPIA-related complaint (see the Privacy Policy's complaints section) — none of this stops you from also approaching the courts.
These terms are governed by the laws of South Africa, and the South African courts have jurisdiction over any dispute arising from them (without limiting your right to use the ombud/regulator channels above first).
If any part of these terms turns out to be unenforceable, the rest still applies — we'll treat the unenforceable part as narrowed or removed just enough to make it valid, without affecting anything else.
These terms, together with the Privacy Policy, are the whole agreement between you and Lift about using the apps, and replace any earlier understanding on the same subject.
You may not transfer your rights under these terms to anyone else. Lift may transfer its rights and obligations under these terms — for example, as part of a restructuring or sale of the business — provided that doesn't reduce the protections you have under them.
If we make a material change, we'll update this page and its "last updated" date, and try to let you know in-app. Continuing to use Lift after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.
